ADAM’s Anywhere, With The D3V Speakers

White ADAM Audio D3V Angle

With IKMultimedia’s recent expansion to their mini monitor range, ultra-portable monitoring solutions seem to be on the rise and now we see ADAM Audio also introduce their latest offering in the diminutive form of the D3V.

With a height of 200mm (240mm with included stand), width of 115mm and depth of 150mm, they feature 3.5″ woofers and 1″ D-ART AMT Tweeters which have the same familiar hand folded design and look as the rest of the ADAM range, so far so good as to what we would expect from a model like this from ADAM. Where it then gets interesting is the unexpected inclusion of a 3.5″ passive radiator on the side of each speaker, looking to help improve the tuning and bass response as well as working to minimize distortion. It’s certainly not the first time we’ve seen monitors featuring a design like this and there’s some quite well regarded speakers out there that use this method as an alternative to a regular open bass ported design.

The included stands are angled at 15 degrees to help direct the speaker output towards the listeners ears and minimise early reflection from the desk itself. This stand can be detached from the speaker, leaving behind a regular flat base which also has a microphone stand 3/8″ screw fitting recessed into the speakers base. This allows you to swap out the included base platform for either a small adjustable desk mic stand or larger floor stand to perfectly adjust he mounting height to match your seated position.

Despite the modest size, these speakers offer up to 2 X 70W RMS when driving the Woofers and 2 X 30W RMS into the Tweeters, offering more than enough overhead to fill plenty of small studios and editing suites.

Input wise we see the inclusion of dual balanced 3.5mm TRS mini jacks for analogue signal input along with a USB-C connection which allow the speakers to essentially function as a sound interface. This could make them an interesting all-in-one solution for scenarios which may not require audio input connections such as mobile media editing rigs, as headphone playback can also be handled via the jack found located on the speaker front plate.

Also found around the rear are a number of DSP switch options, designed to give some quick EQ adjustments in terms of how the speakers are setup in any given enviroment. The “Position” switch aims to help with the boundary frequency response with its Stand/Wall/Corner location settings. The “Desk” switch aims to reduce early desk based reflections and offers None (floor stand) / Small / Large desk options. Lastly the “Room” mode options are Treated / Moderate / Untreated and look to help with room based reflection and flutter. All together these should allow small changes to the outputted signal that should quickly allow you better placee these speakers wherever you may find yourself working.

Back around the front and to the left of the headphone socket is a LED backlit logo plate. The purpose of this other than acting as a power light, is that it will double up as an indicator when making further adjustments to the setup. Hidden functionally comes from the multi-function volume control, which through a series of clicks of the dial will allow you to mute/unmute the device, switch between the USB-C and analogue inputs or allow you to reverse the left/right signal free through the respective speaker. Alternatively, pressing and holding down the volume dial will instead switch off the speakers.

All together the D3V’s present an interesting package and whilst they may not be the first choice for handling the bass heavy dance music that their bigger kin tend to be, as quality secondary mix monitors that you can easily relocate from the studio to any other environment that you find yourself working within, they may tick a lot of boxes. For regular mixing duties with live music or even in a video editing suite or on location when filming the design make a lot of sense and the sound card functionality may help to keep within space requirements in tightly packed locations. With a keen price point and the ADAM Audio legacy behind it, you may find the D3V popping up all over the place in the near future.
